Suspect in deadly shooting during weekend protest in Portland faces several charges, including murder

On Tuesday, the victim was recognized as 60-year-old Brandy Knightly. The way of death was murder, and the cause of death was a gunshot injury to the head, according to the Medical Examiners Office.

The person who shot Smith “remained at the scene, worked together with detectives, and was later on launched,” cops said in an email to CNN.

Smith and some protesters were equipped, authorities said, and the shooting occurred around 8 p.m. regional time after Smith asked the protesters to leave the 13-acre Normandale Park.

” Most people on scene left without talking with cops,” the Portland Police Bureau stated in a news release. “Detectives think a great deal of individuals either experienced what recorded the occurrence or happened as it unfolded. This is a really complex occurrence, and private investigators are trying to put this puzzle together without having all the pieces.”.

” Several participants asked Smith to leave them alone. Moments later, Smith fired and drew a firearm at the crowd, striking five people,” the DAs office stated in the news release.

The shootings ended after Smith was shot in the hip area, and he stays hospitalized in a serious condition, authorities said. Someone passed away at the scene, and four others were hospitalized with various injuries, the DAs office said.

The shooting unfolded Saturday night after Benjamin Smith, described by cops as a house owner, apparently challenged a group of demonstrators who were opposing the killing of Amir Locke by Minneapolis authorities, authorities stated.

The suspect in a weekend shooting that left one lady dead and 4 individuals injured during a demonstration in Portland, Oregon, faces several charges, including murder, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Locke, a 22-year-old Black man, was killed on February 2 by cops carrying out a no-knock warrant on a residence. The killing had triggered demonstrations in Minneapolis in addition to calls for an end to no-knock warrants by police.

Smith, 43, faces charges of second-degree murder and four counts of second-degree tried murder, according to a press release from Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt. He was also charged with two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm and two counts of second-degree attack with a gun.

Cops described the shooting scene as “extremely disorderly” and kept in mind some witnesses were uncooperative to the responding officers.
